The Chicago Mayor’s Youth Commission was launched in September of 2019 by Mayor Lightfoot and First Lady Eshleman. In addition to advising the Mayor and her team on issues that impact Chicago’s young people, Youth Commissioners help collaborate with policy-makers, organize youth-centered events, and support youth outreach and communications campaigns to ensure youth are aware of and engaged in a variety of City initiatives. The current cohort of Youth Commissioners, comprising 24 diverse youth, represent neighborhoods and schools across the city. The class is helping develop a youth-focused vision and agenda for the Mayor’s administration while becoming a key voice in the City’s policy efforts. The Chicago MYC is made up of 6 different working groups, in which each MYC member collaborates to bring light to issues and help bring initiatives to each working group topic. The working group focuses on the issues of public safety, education, environmental justice, mental health, neighborhood development, and BIPOC equity and justice. Alongside these diligent working groups, MYC maintains 6 different committees that help maintain the Youth Commission, its outreach, and its structure. These committees focus on social media, event planning, charter, My CHI. My Future., marketing, and recruitment.
